Free Lessons are available every Thursday at Urangan Bowls Club with Coach Dorine Verhaar

Time: 7:30am to 9:30am

My task as a lawn bowls coach is:

1. Teaching the basics of lawn bowls:
– Learning how to put the mat down.
– Rolling of the jack (or the kitty).
– Showing how the bias in lawn bowls works.
– Showing how to play forehand and backhand bowls.
– Introducing new bowlers into the game of lawn bowls.
– Showing the tasks of leads, 2nds. 3rds and skips.
– Showing how the cards get marked.
– Showing how to measure for the winning shots.

2. Giving exercises to improve the way bowlers bowl.
They all go according to Bowls Australia instructions.

3. Helping bowling arm bowlers to get the rhythm of the bowling arm.

4. Teaching bowlers to play Canadian Bowls, which is an exercise in on-line and off-line bowling.

5. Doing bowls test, to see how the bowlers improve in their abilities to play.

6. Give players particular instructions for certain bowls days.
– Like only 2 bowls to play in a game. 3 Bowls to play in a game.
– 2 Bowls to play, first, then the skip plays 2 bowls, then the lead plays 2 bowls and the skip plays the last 2 bowls.
– Also playing two/ four/ two bowls.
– Instructions to play a game of singles.

7. Play and learn to play the game of scroungers and last man standing.

8. Teaching how to do safe upshots and drives.

Further we teach the bowlers manners, like offering the 1st bowl to the opposition bowler and picking up the mat. Also to mark the scoreboard.
